    1968 skylark with super turbine 300 and 310 wildcat motor

    Can someone help me with this data plate decoding please. Vehicle has bucket seats and a 2 spd console, no air, 300 wildcat motor. Unsure if the motor and trans are original to vehicle. A question I have is this an early model 1968, wondering if that motor could be a carry over from the 1967 year? Is this supposed to be a bucket seat car? Vin # 44678K102XXX 09E 3295

    4 = Buick
    44 = Skylark Custom
    67 = 2-door convertible
    8 = 1968
    K = Kansas City, MO
    102XXX = sequential number, starting a 100,001 for V8 cars so that makes your car the 2,xxx V8 car built at Kansas City, MO

    09E 3295
    ST 68-44467 KAN 23 Body
    TR 178-3 E-2 Paint

    09E = September (09) 1967, fifth week (E)

    3295 = broadcast or sequence number, should also be found on build sheet

    ST = Style
    68 = 1968 model year
    44467 = style number, see VIN decode

    KAN = Kansas City, MO

    23 = body number

    TR = trim
    178 = Black Vinyl with Bucket-Type Front Seats
    B (should be a -B and not a -3, so recheck this) = bucket seats

    Paint
    E = Deep Blue Metallic
    2 = black convertible top

    Production usually started around 08B, so hard to imagine they would still have some 1967 V8 engines around after almost two months of production (09E) and after building over 2,000 other V8 cars. The engine serial number should match the last 8 digits of the VIN. Here is some info that shows where to find the engine numbers:

    68 lark

    Buford26 thank you, that was everything I was looking for. Really appreciate your help. Glad to hear the car is not quite the morphidite I thought it was.

    The firewall tag and VIN both say 68, so you very likely do have a 1968 car. If it has a 300 engine, that engine had to be swapped in by a PO. The transmission could be original to the car though.

    holy cow, the 23rd body out of the Kansas plant? yeah, that's pretty early in the production run. remember, bodies are numbered sequentially no matter which model car was being built out. i'm sure there are some Specials ( and probably some other stuff ) in the first 25 cars but that Skylark could be one of the first ~10 Skylarks built in Kansas.

    i'm assuming the last three digits of your VIN is also down in the double digit range? yeah, September has to be the beginning of new model year production.

    if this actually is an OEM 300, the EIN variation of the VIN should be stamped on the block. that is, the last 6 digits of the VIN should match the last 6 digits of the EIN.
