My 52 Buick is converted to 12 volts, I still have the stock 6 volt gauge, I have tried many different after market resistors and they just do not work that well. Are sending units voltage sensitive? Has anyone had good results with an after market resistor? Where did you get it?
A gauge will not work well with a resistor unless you can very accurately measure the amount of current the gauge draws. For that reason, a voltage regulator for the gauge is a better choice when converting to 12 volts. It will usually be built around some version of a 7806 solid state regulator. If you are comfortable working with electronics you can do it yourself. This is about a $1.00 item at Radio Shack, and even less from a "real" electronic component supplier.
If you feel electrically challenged, you can get a commercially packaged plug and play version under the name of Runtz and probably a few others.
