Thread: 12 volt oil pressure sending unit for 53 Special

12 volt oil pressure sending unit for 53 Special

I'm having trouble finding the correct oil pressure sending unit for my 53 Buick Special. I have a set of Dolphin gages. Everything works but the oil pressure gauge rises upon start up but then drops back down until I give it gas and then it rises slightly and drops back down. I suspect there's an ohm difference between the gauge and the sending unit. Does anyone know what brand and model oil sending unit I should order for my Straight 8 engine to work with 12 volt Dolphin gauges? Thanks Mike

Are you saying that Dolphin does not separately sell the sending units for their own gauges?

I contacted Dolphin to buy a replacement oil sending unit but I never heard back from them.

Their website shows a phone number 386-437-1077. You might want to keep trying it until you get a live person. Even if they won't sell you a sending unit, you will still need to get the resistance spec from them so you can look at units from other makers.

Dolphin replied to my email and claimed there is no after-market sending unit that is compatible with their gauges.

A 53 Buick Special is 6 volts. Have you converted it to 12 volts?

Well, that's good news in a way. It means that whether or not Dolphin is telling you the truth, they do want to sell you a sending unit.
