5235314=sequential number unique to engine, falls into 1949 range
4=Series 40 or Special (which used the 248 in 1949)
Hi all,
Picked up a Straight 8 today, it's going to go into my '35 Chevrolet 3 window Standard coupe. Needless to say I will be elongating the Frame. I measured the head so I know it's not a 320... trying to figure out if it's a 248 or a 263. The number stamped on the side of the block is 52353144 if anybody can help me identify it I would be very greatful!
Cheers,
Marc

Thanks for the info Buford26!
What kind of transmission is that? It looks like an open driveshaft. If that is so it will make installation a lot easier. What a great way to get an old Chevy back in service and up date it to a "modern" engine!
Suntreemcanic.. I believe it's a 3 speed, seller told me it came with the motor but I can't confirm.
So Murphy's law being what it is... a few days after I picked up this 248 another engine was posted for sale close to where I live and I couldn't pass it up! It's a 320 that came out of a '52 Roadmaster. The seller had swapped in a nailhead to rebuild the Fireball and decided he liked the Nailhead so much he'd leave it in.
The 320 spins freely, sounds like it has good compression. It had a complete rebuild including cam, lifters and valve job with hardened valve seats for unleaded gas. He even gave me the rebuild kit for the original 4bbl carb.
I hope to unload the 248+3 speed trans in the near future so if anybody's interested keep an eye out in the classified section/send me a note!
Serial number on the block is 67393817
Well that 320 is way better than a 248 and it has a 4 barrel carb way modern. You will just have to extend the frame a little more!
Super G... here are 2 pics that I hope will give you the general sizes you were looking for. The Dimensions for the "box" the manual trans would take up don't take into account the shift lever in the pic... if you needed to then that "box" would be as tall as the engine! I hope this helps.
There may be more demand for the transmission than for the engine. The last year for the top shift transmissions was 1938. You can't just bolt that shifter onto a later case because the case for the side shift boxes is different.
If you would like the top shifter for your Chevy, you can bolt that box to your 320 by redrilling the 320 bellhousing. It's not strong enough for racing with sticky tires though.
