I think you need to pop the pin out of the end of the shaft and the gear will slide off. Then the shaft will pullout of the housing. Should let you finish things up then.

Hello guys,
has anyone taken apart a 1956 buick distributor...I want to convert to a Pertronix, I have the distributor out of the car since it really needs to be taken apart and cleaned. I have removed the cap & rotor as well as the points and condensor from the plate...how do I take the plate out completely? it doesn't have any more screws to be removed from the plate...any help on this one

If I were you I'd update the distributor to the "Window" type used from '57-'66. ALL "Nail" distributors are a direct replacement. What you will now have is much more readily available parts at ANY auto parts store. An easier time finding ANY parts needed & easier electronic conversion as well as being easier to dial in the advance curve with readily available kits. I have distributors, I rebuild them also, have electronic one wire conversions & can Taylor your advance curve for your combo.
