    oil pump vs pan

Help new to the forum have a 364 nailhead oil pan with rear sump that the nut came loose from the bottom of the pan. was pitted bad so had the bottom sump replaced. setting it in place dry pump is hitting bottom of pan but if i put the gasket in place nothing hit does any one know what the clearace between the pump and the pan should be or how deep is the pan suppost to be?

You should have between 1/4" to 3/8" with the gasket in place. You can use clay (or in my case Playdough) to check the depth and bend the pick-up tube accordingly.

ok my pick up tube is inside the screen and that has the clearance but the sheild/screen that is mounted to the bottom of the pump is what hitting the pan and that you cant change.

The shield/screen is what needs the clearance from the bottom. You should be able to bend the tube up-wards to provide clearance. Heat will help if need be.

The 57-58 has a pot metal pickup, it is also the bottom of the vacuum pump, that distance can't be changed so the pan must be dented in on the bottom, hammer the oil pan bottom out for clearance.. We always replace the 57-58 oil/vacuum pump with a 59-61 type. Our website nailheadbuick.com has that tech info in it.. Russ
