That smell could indicate a coolant leak, but the leak wouldn't necessarily cause overheating unless the level in the radiator got so low that it would be obvious. What I am saying is, you may need to replace the core anyway because of the leak, but don't count on that to fix the overheating problem.
I would suggest first checking the converter switch as described by Dr. Frankenbuick, and if that doesn't turn up anything, then look for some other cause of insufficient air or coolant flow at idle. Do you have a tach? If yes, what is your idle speed both in and out of gear?
