    Decoding '69 California GS P-O-P, Body Tag and EIN

    Hi All,

    Just came across an interesting California GS, and am attempting to figure out if: 1, is is 'numbers matching', and 2, what the original equipment would have been.

    It was originally sold in York, PA by Bratton Buick (04-241) and appears to have a period correct A/C system fitted.

    Info and pictures:

    On a related note, I want to determine the EIN of this thing. On this motor (RP code 350ci), where would the number be? Is it behind the power steering pump on the left-hand cylinder bank?

    Thanks in advance, any help would be appreciated.

    VIN
    433279H351541

    4 = Buick
    33 = Special Deluxe
    27 = 2-door thin pillar coupe
    9 = 1969 model year
    H = Flint, MI
    351541 = sequential number unique to car/engine, starting at 100,001 for V8 cars at each plant

    POP
    118 NN 2 433279H351541
    RP 470 LO 6
    JH 326 1 4 8

    trim = 118 = Black Vinyl trim
    paint = NN = Solid Burgundy Mist Metallic (NN = Buick sales code)
    top = 2 = Black vinyl top (2 = Buick sales code)
    VIN = 433279H351541 (see above)
    RP 470 = engine production code (RP) and build date (470) should match whats stamped on the engine
    LO = 2.73 posi rear axle
    6 = build month (June)
    JH 326 = transmission code, should match numbers on trans
    1 4 8 = option codes (1 = power brakes, 4 = AM radio, 8 = power steering)

    Body tag
    ST 69 43327 FL1 309096 BDY
    TR 118 67 B PNT
    06C

    ST = Style
    69 = 1969 model year
    43327 = Special Deluxe 2-door thin pillar coupe (note style 43327 is correct for GS California)
    FL1 = Flint, MI body plant
    309096 = body sequence number, no relaltion to VIN
    BDY = Body
    TR = Trim
    118 = Black Vinyl trim
    paint = 67 = Solid Burgundy Mist Metallic (67 = Fisher Body code)
    top = B = Black vinyl top (B = Fisher Body code)
    PNT = Paint
    06C = body build date = June 1969 (06), third week (C)

    EIN should be 49H351541
    4 = Buick
    9 = 1969 model year
    H = Flint, MI
    351541 = sequential number unique to car/engine, starting at 100,001 for V8 cars at each plant

    It is located on the same side of the engine as the production code, at the front of the engine. See here for the location:

    Considering that the actual stamped engine production code/build date shown in your picture matches the POP, I would guess that the engine serial number will match the VIN.

    '69 p.o.p.

    On the '69 P.O.P. the "LO" denotes Rear Axle Code.

    So the P.O.P. reads correct for the drivetrain as Sean says for a "69 GS Calf.

    RP -350-4 with a JH - TH350 with a LO - 2.73 Limited Slip Rear Axle.

    Gentlemen, that is just astounding. Thanks a lot for the help.

    So, here is a bit of a query - according to this image,

    id_400_430_1968.jpg

    The EIN should be to the left (front) of the air pipe, right beneath the front two spark plugs on the left bank. Problem is, that is where I took the '470' picture, and there is no id number to be found. There also appears to be no stamping beneath the rear two spark plugs. Anyone seen anything like this before?

    I think that is for the 400/430/455. This is where it should be on the 350.

    Ah yes, an update -

    Thanks for the picture Sean. After scrubbing 43 years of caked on oil residue away, this little gem showed its face:

    Correct location as per Sean's picture, orientation was vertical, not horizontal, but otherwise where it was supposed to be.

    Thanks gents. These things tell quite a story when you dig into them, don't they?
