Thread: ID help needed!

    ID help needed!

    I have a 1962 215. The tag on the block reads "3I2508022" (1962 Skylark built in South Gate, Calif.). The engine tag, however, reads "HJ7513" and for the life of me I can't find ANY reference to an engine tag having an HJ prefix. If you have any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. Here's a pic of it:

    probably, the machinist grabbed the wrong stamp. the letter / number stamping sets that i've seen usually come in something like a box arranged with the stamps in 6 x 6 rows and columns. so you'd have an arrangement that looked like this:

    it would be really easy to grab the wrong stamp and not realize it til after the block had been processed ... if the factory ever noticed it at all.

    on the plus side, it looks like you've got a high compression 215. congratulations.

    Thanks Bob! That's a good explanation and I'll bet you're right. I thought they might have gone to "HJ" at the end of the year since "J" came next, but your thought makes more sense.

    Yes, I know a fair bit about the motor. I bought it with the intent to rebuild it and put it in my 1979 Triumph TR7. But I recently completed the rebuild of the stock 4-banger (for practice, my first rebuild!) and it actually runs really well and has a good amount of get-up-and-go. This will give me time to do a nice rebuild job on the 215. I have quite a bit of work to do to it before I can drop it in though (need a bell housing from it to the 5-speed gearbox, for example).
