The biggest prolem grease jockies would not greese the joint it even happened at the dealers.
I have previously written to buy a new repair kit, also called Center Ball Stud Repair Kit. I found 1 for a '61-'62 Olds F-85 at a linked site "obsoleteolds.com" and purchased it($65 for what was probably once a $3 item). A driveline shop installed it for me, and found that the receiver and the seal seemed to be identical. They used my original spring, modified slightly. It works fine. I'm still looking to buy a kit. The big external difference I see now is when you pick up the 2 driveshaft pieces, they are now connected stiffly at the center carrier, they used to be very loose, and difficult to pick up as 1 piece. So, if you have strange noise in your driveline, it may not be your differential or your universals, it may be your c-v. Pick up the removed driveshaft. Try the center bearing for easy spinning, and be sure the rubber is intact. If the 2 driveshaft pieces seem tightly connected to each other, and there is no looseness in the center carrier. you're c-v is probably OK. You can't see it. It is difficult to see in the shop manual driveshaft picture. I spent about $1000 to solve this driveline noise and vibration. Happy Motoring.
