    knock,knock engine part 2

Follow up on spun bearing. Rod bearing no.6 can I save the old girl or will I put her to rest. I installed the .030 bearing last night, after of course cleaning up the crank journal with a scotch brite pad,.030 bearing fit was close to the clearance I felt needed but still not happy. So tonight I ordered a set of .040 bearings,I will let you know if this works, odds are probably not but for 40.00 bucks its worth a shot. My follow up will be knock, knock engine part 3. Has this happen to anyone else out there with any luck?

    Never heard of such disparity

Has the engine been rebuilt before? I'm under the impression that it was not, as you started by replacing the bearings with standard size. With a scotch-brite pad, you shouldn't be able to remove any substantial material from the steel crank journal. There should be NO reason to go to a .040 over/undersize.

If your crankshaft is still standard size- putting in an .040 over/under bearing will make physical contact between the rod and crank journals- guaranteeing a burned bearing all over again. Please install your standard bearing again but this time with a piece of "plasti-gauge" and make sure there is only a few thousandths of a gap. That would be best way to ensure you have the right fit.

Dont go with "close". Go with what you know. go with hard numbers.
"Stanley" keeps on putting along.....ya gotta love the old man vibe from this 4dr Century!

    Recap on knock,knock engine

bbatka, thanks for your reply. The motor has 125,000 miles on it and never had a rebuilt all original. My son came home said car is making funny sound, cranked it over it was a horrible sound like knocking on heavens door sound, pulled in garage, took off oil pan found no.6 rod to crank loose as a goose, took out spun bearing and yes the crank suffered some damage, damage to the point of no return maybe.I did sand on journal and finished off with scotch brite pad, know it is probably waist of time and money trying to size new bearing to a bad journal, for 40 bucks its worth it to me plus I showed my son what can happen when you dont keep the oil clean.Have not recieved the .040 bearing yet when I do I will let you know what happen in part 3.
