Tommy, how did the 340 turn out?? The rear in my 67 Skylark had no paint just rust
it was built in the Baltimore Md. Plant

Hey all.. Does anybody know if these rears were painted black? I can't find the slightest hint of paint anywhere! Even after I removed the gloppy dealer under coat, nothin' . The yellow NJ letters are very clear as it was on the one brake drum. How come every restored car i see has the rear painted black?
Ugh

Well it was a coating that was used on most body panels and completed stamped and suspension parts for rust prevention when sitting in the plants before install onto cars. SO it really in most cases is NOT even painted a color per say or painted at all. The black was more as a primer type deal. Just like a lot of cars had over spray under the chassis too.
Things back in the Anything chassis was really not worried about as it was under the car as far as looks go anyway.
So all the floor pans, inner fenders and inside doors are the black rust inhibitor spray and most everything was sprayed with this....that is most likely the reason for your black under chassis paint.
IF someone else has a better answer, please lets here it.
