I had/have a 63 Riv with the dynaflow and 401. It had lots of low end grunt and would spin the tires easily.
I went and picked up a 401 today. I checked the code and it indicated a 4 barrel 401 1963 year. What was interesting was the dynaflow attached to the engine. It was a open drive shaft model, I thought all dynaflows were enclosed drive shaft type. So now the question comes up, where the later dynaflows much improved over the one that came in my 52? If I put this behind a 425 would the engine rev up a lot to accelerate or will it lock up early and utilize the low RPM torque of a 425? I am sure it is in good condition, the trans came out of a 63 Buick converted to a Hurst. It only showed 29,000 miles. Since there is a conventional seal at the drive shaft input it should not leak when sitting around like the old enclosed drive shaft type do. If you have one what is your opinion and experience with one?

With a "Nail" behind the DynaFlow it would be MUCH improved over the straight "8". The more "Modern" of the DynaFlow's started in '56. Buick went to open drive in '61 through '63, the last year of the DynaFlow. In actuality the DynaFlow had a higher torque multiplication in "Low" in the "High Stall" switch pitch position than a TH400 in 1st. gear & high stall, so tire roosting should not be a problem unless there's something wrong with the "Nail" installed.

Open driveline in 59.
As stated in my reply, '61 was the 1st. year for open drive & DynaFlow. So that makes 1960 the LAST year of the torque tube. It was NOT open drive in '59, unless someone converted it as it DID NOT come that way from the factory.

My apologies, I have the taste of crow. I thought I knew everything. Thanks for bringing me back to reality.
No worries. I have the same thing that happens to myself. Many of us have graduated from the 3 R's to the "old age" C S's. Can't hear, see or remember sh----t!!!!!
