Thread: B58 wont start

    B58 wont start

ive got a 58 with a dynaflow and the car has been sitting for a couple of months.
when i went to start it up yesterday nothing happened. after depressing the gas pedal several times it made contact only once for a split second. i thought it was the battery so i charged it up and tried starting it today. nothing happens.

where does the ignition system "make contact" to start the car up? what engages the starter?

what stuff can i check to start ruling things out and narrowing down the problem?

I have a 52 manual, will that be pretty much the same system as my 58?

Could start with checking the ground, but more likely to end up in one of the switches to the starter.

There is a '57 chassis manual in the reference section, probably a bit closer to your car.

i touched the two wires on the carb switch and got it to "click" once like it was trying to engage.
then I replaced the starter relay and now it makes a loud, fast paced, clicking/buzzing sound.
Ive got a starter solenoid but havent put it on yet...does it sound like thats the problem?

solenoid is replaced, its still doing the same thing. its definitely coming from the starter. i can feel heavy vibraton from the starter and you can see the engine try to turn.
what does the big" part of the starter do? how does it work? does that part usually go bad?

I had a similar problem with mine and it turned out to be a poor contact at the earth cable and the where it is bolted to the block. Remove the bolt and clean the end of the cable and the surface area where it contacts the block.
