Engine number should start with V720080-4, according to the references on this site.
NEW GUY- please be easy!!
Just picked up my first restor , 55 Buick Special , 4 door HT 40 Series, alot of confusion on the engine, Here are the numbers-
1166849-1
and of course, Ive pretty much exhulsted all the "FREE" (right) please to get the proper information, can anyone assist, and how can I track down an really old vin number, last time titled was 2001, however no search engines have turned up anything, tks
Engine number should start with V720080-4, according to the references on this site.
Of course Im more confused then when I started, from what I just read, it may appear that I do NOT have the original motor-
the last numbers of the vin and engine stamp will match???
I have a vin
1B4064297
I have a number on the side of the engine
1166849-1
I figured out the meaning of the vin, but I am completly lost with the engine number , Im trying to get a good handle on just what size motor this is, V8 with a 2 bbl. Its sitting in there nice and snug as if it was the original.
Any ideas on how and where I can read the engine number?
Tks
Have you looked at the engine identification articles in the "Reference" section? It will tell where to find the numbers and show pictures or where and what to look for.
The number you have found looks like a casting number.
and after looking in the casting number chart, I see a head casting number, 1166349 53-56 264/322

Are you sure you have entered the car and engine serial numbers correctly? The car serial number should start with 4 for Special (40 series), so I would expect it to be 4B4064297.
For the engine number, once the number reached 1,000,000 in 1955 the V prefix was no longer used. The number 1,166,849 is in the range for 1955. The suffix on the engine number should be -4 for Special, -5 for Super, -6 for Century, and -7 for Roadmaster. So I would expect the engine number to be 1166849-4. In 1955 the Special only came with the 264 V8 nailhead with 2-barrel carb and the Super, Century, and Roadmaster came with the 322 V8 nailhead with 4-barrel carb. The car serial number (VIN) and engine serial number didn't match until 1957.

WOW you "nailheaded" this one right on, I need to print this off and stick in glove box. I will also go back again and look at those numbers on the side of the block. Moving forward on this now with the great information, thanks again , Larry
