A Super is wider & taller than a Special. Along the lines of a RoadMaster but less costly, usually with low compression & a 2bbl. carb. It IS 12volts & NEGATIVE ground.

I just bought a 53 buick and i'm trying to figure out if it's a special or a super. I'm pretty sure it's a super since the truck handle says "super" on it and the front bumper has "super" on it also. What are the differences between a Super and Speical? I've looked at all the pictures on the net and can't tell the difference.
Also, I'm pretty sure that it's a 12Volt car but is it positive to ground or Negative to ground? This is my first Old car and don't want to mess anything up. Thanks in advance.

The 53 Special still had a straight eight, last year for it. The super had the V8.
Is one more desirable then the other? For me I don't really care but i'm just curious.
Guess it depends on whether you want a first year in production V8 (Super) or a last year of production with a tried and true straight eight that Buick made for over 20 years (Special).
I love straight eights, so I would prefer a Special.
Supers were the middle of the road Buick; fancier than a Special, yet lighter and less expensive than a Roadmaster.
Any old Buick from the '50s is a nice car.
