Page states 70-71 heads are not interchangable with 75

NOTED FROMifferences Between 1970-71 And 1972 and Later Type Block

1970-71 HEADS ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE WITH 1972-5 HEADS DUE TO REVISED INTAKE MANIFOLD FACE AT THE HEAT CROSSOVER AND A.I.R. HOLES.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do besides use the newer head gasket to replace my 1976 heads with 1971 on a 1976 buick 455. Thanks a mill, doug

    Thumbs up head replacement

Not a problem at all. Just use an early style intake or any aftermarket intake. TA Performence and Offenhauser both make very good ones.

I love it when people say "can't" rather than - you can, it's not too difficult to do, and it just requires a bit of explanation.

I had this problem with my Skylark when I put an early intake on a later head. So first, a few pictures
1st a picture of the motor with the offy intake on it. The motor is a 71 455

If you note, there's a bit of exhaust coloring on the side of the center of the intake? That's from firing it up and realizing I needed to fix the problem.

Here's what you need to do.
you need to plug these holes - marked with the X.

I simply mig'd the holes shut while using stainless rod (nickel is in the rod). Then I ground the plugs into a V shape and push them into the holes. Then tacked them in place.

So here's a picture with the plugs in place.

obviously you have to do the fix to both sides.

no stupid ticking sound, and I used an early intake on a later head. The "right" way to do that (if you have the head off) is to fill that center cavity with aluminum. The wrong way (the "advice" I got) is to try to tap those holes.... I swear, I owe the machinist who suggested that - I think I'll take him some heads to tap The Buick heads are harder than Chev or such heads (higher nickel content) - thus tapping them is an effort in futility... especially since you can weld the holes shut so easily.

the only down side is you don't have hot air blowing under your carb.... and 70 heads are different than 71 heads.... 70 heads don't have the heat passages. Going the direction you are - late to early - is a direct fit, and the gaskets won't care that they don't have exhaust under them

    questions?
