Thread: 1985 Buick regal with 2bbl carb vacuum leak.

1985 Buick regal with 2bbl carb vacuum leak.

I've got an 1985 Regal Limited v6 with a rochester 2bbl carb that has a vacuum leak that appears to be coming from around the throttle shaft. I rebuilt the carb but the kit didn't come with any replacement bushings for the throttle shaft. The shaft has a little bit of play and the engine sputters pretty bad at idle. You almost have to hold the gas while sitting at a light to keep it from stalling. I had found a digital copy of the rochester carb manual and printed it out. It mentions that when rebuilding the carb that you may need to replace the bushings for the throttle shaft. They just don't seem to supply those bushings in the kit that I bought from Advance. The other stores seem to have the same type of kit. A rebuilt carb is a bit out of my price range right now let alone a NOS carb. Anybody else run into this problem?

    Thanks

I don't think that the little bit of extra air you are getting around the throttle shaft is your problem. The small amount of extra air can be covered up by enriching your idle mixture. Installing bushings in a carburetor base plate is not something that is done in a regular kit install. The removal of the throttle plates and shaft are kind of a pain as the screws that hold the blades to the shaft are not meant to ever be removed. Usually a special tool kit with specific reamers is required for the install of bushings also. Your average shop today that is used to fuel injected cars will probably not have this equipment. I would say that you have an idle circuit problem such as a plugged passage or a vacuum leak somewhere else.

I ended up rebuilding the carb again. I found that the o-rings to the idle air bleed valve had dissolved allowing excess air to bypass. Now the car is running much better at idle but still has some sputtering. I just need to get the mixture right. Does anybody here know what the specs are for the idle air bleed valve and the lean mixture screw? The carb is a dualjet 210 electronic (CCC).
