Thread: V6- 231 & 252 rod directrion for installation

    Question V6- 231 & 252 rod directrion for installation

Hello all, I have a 252 N/A engine getting rebuilt. I just got back my boxes of parts to re-assemble my engine. I noticed that three of the rods have the double bump/dimple opposite side of the piston direction notch. The machine-shop foreman just told me that the rod bearing surface notches are to be orientated to the outside of the engine- thats why three are "backwards". Its the 1-3-5 pistons that have the rod bumps facing the rear of the engine.

But everything I've always read says that the two rod bumps/dimples are to face the front of the engine. Which is correct? Gotta find out before I try to assempble this engine and blow something up!!! Thanx in advance!! brad b.
"Stanley" keeps on putting along.....ya gotta love the old man vibe from this 4dr Century!

This is straight out of the Buick Service Manual.

    1) Notch on piston towards front of engine.

    2) No. 1, 3, 5 two bosses on rods towards rear of engine. (Not Shown)

    3) Chamfered corners of rod cap towards front of engine.

    2) No. 2, 4, 6 two bosses on rods towards front of engine. (Not Shown)

    3) Chamfered corners of rod cap towards rear of engine.

The machine shop is right. 3 one way, 3 the other.
