Thread: Modifying 48 320 and switching to a 53 dynaflow possible?

Modifying 48 320 and switching to a 53 dynaflow possible?

Alright im new to i8s but i have done some research on the web and i know my 48 roadmaster with the 320 and the dynaflow has babbit bearings, i was wondering if i could just swap the crank and rods to the later 320 insert type bearings in the future. Also anything besides the fireball logo on the vavle cover to identify hyraulic lifters? mine is crusty and the is not paint on the motor at all

Also ive heard the the 53 and later dynaflows are better that what came before it, but is there anything involved that would make the swap complicated. i know to avoid the v8 dynaflows. any info would be great thanks

    53 Dynaflows

The 53 dynaflows were new an improved design, they were twin turbines. They were available behind the 263 straight eight. I am not sure if you could change bell housings and make them work. I had a 52 dynaflow and updated to a 53 twin turbine dynaflow and I can say there was a significant improvement.

I don't think you would have to switch the crank. All you need are insert rods or if its possible, have your rods converted to use inserts. I really don't think that it's all that necessary. Having your rods re babbitted by a reputable firm will give good service and reliability.

well i finally traced the oil and mine is hydraulic lifter so i might keep the block and whatnot i also know that kanter auto products advertises a sevise to put insert bearings in the babbit rods just wondered if the swap ccould be done
