lots of things:
make sure the oil pan hasn't been dented, a crankshaft counterweight might be hitting it
possibly a loose bolt on the torque convertor
do you have a mechanics stethoscope? you can use one of those to get a more accurate fix on the exact location of the ticking.
if you don't have a real stethoscope you can always grab a long screwdriver and hold the handle to your ear.

the 455 I found inna barn was sitting onna palat; one slat knocked out for the oil pan to fit - however, when we fired it up we had this tick tick tick.
used the stethoscope tp locate it. they had either dropped it or it bounced in the truck on the way back; the dent in the pan was about 1/4" - nuff for the counter weight to hit it.
got the pan hammered out, trying to decide if I should fill the groves that were left by the rod... braze maybe?? or put a protective skin on the outside? any ideas?
thanks
Butch

my old man makes his own deep sump oil pans.
cut the bottom of sump off with a tiger saw or plasma cutter or something, fab in your sump extension and weld in, then weld the original bottom of the sump onto the extension.
fill the oil pan with gasoline or something to check weld integrity. empty and touch up spots as necessary and repeat your leak test.
you would only need to do that last section.
MIG is probably best for this as you don't have to worry about slag.

thanks for the input Bob, it was the FRONT part of the pan that was dented - probably not more than 1/2".
it still has it's integrity, I just thought it might be weak in that spot.
I think I'm just going to melt some brazing rod into the grooves - smonone
suggested JB Weld; just wondering what oil would react to it
Butch
If there isnt a whole I wouldn't suggest putting anything in it , if out comes loose you dont want any thing getting into oiling system
