Seal between torque ball and torque tube

    Hello,

I need help, hope someone can get me the right answer. I am duration a restauration from a buick 58 special (dynaflow). I am on the step for reinstall the transmission with rear axle. Between torque ball (transmission) and torque tube (propeller shaft) was a seal. The "old" seal was flat on both sides. The new seal is only on 1 side flat on the other side the lip (see picture). I donīt know in which direction needs the seal installed. Needs the new seal installed with the flat side into the torque ball flange (seen in the picture, only flat side is seen after installing) or needs the seal with the flat side installed in the propeller shaft (only flat side seen after installing) ? Sorry my english is not good, I work on it...

    Thanks
    Thomas

    trans seal

That is a very good question. My 1950 is different but about the same. I would say the seal is present to prevent trans oil from running down into the rear axle assembly, so the lip should face the direction you want to seal, that would be flat toward rear end, lip toward trans.

I would check first with fatco transmissions, I had some questions and they were very helpful.

    good luck

Yes, lip towards trans. You are trying to prevent trans. fluid from entering rear end fluid & overfilling rear end oil.

Thanks for your answers. I'm relieved to hear that. I checked also the repair manual but I found no notice about this seal and which direction, but there was a notice for the pinion seal on the other side of the tube, with excatly what you are described. Lip towards where the oil is coming (differential bearings). In wikipedia I found also something about this kind of seal, with the same notice, lip towards oil. Thanks for your help.

    regards Thomas
