How fast can we go ?

This is something I wonder ...
    How fast can a 248 , 263 or 320 go ?
Without major modifications . So I mean a stock engine , or decent carb , ignition , minor head porting , etc . At which rpm ?

My trans is dead , so I plan to use a T5 . I suppose this will help on highway . It seems 70 or 80 mph was easy when the cars were new .
Now , the roads are better , maybe we don t need a 8.1 trans anymore

    Thanks .
    Phil

    speed for the old baby

I had (at one time) my all original dual carb 41 buick special going 80 mph for miles --smooth ,rpm's seemed ok range .I liked it ,but the wife with me said STOP BEATING THE OLD GIRL ,SHE DESERVES TO BE CRUISED . The credit rating on these old cars is not high enough compaired to the late 70's piles that were produced at a cheap cost . Good luck on the conversion and drive it like you love it.

buick supposely named the 36 CENTURY because it would run 100mph. In my foolish youth my daddy purchased a new 1950 Special (248 inch) On the speedo I drove it to 105mph. oviously wrong but it gave me bragging rights.

    The Century was with the 320 , not a 248 or 263 :P
    I thought this began in 37 .
    105 mph on a 1950 car must be a scarely experience :P
Even if it was only 90 .

It's about 10 at night in 1956. We are in my buddy's 1950 Mercury at the last stop light heading out of town onto a 4 lane. Next to us is a 1950 Roadmaster full of kids our age. Light changes; we leave the Buick in the dust. Mercury rolls up to exactly 100 by the speedo and we're really cruising. My buddy looks in the mirror and wonders out loud if that's a cop about a mile or so behind us. The car behind keep sneaking up on us. Finally, that Roadmaster blows past us like a freight train passing a bum. The Merc is still doing it's 100 MPH. I still believe that a Buick Roadmaster, given about 20 miles, will hit 140 with no trouble at all!!!!

Back in 1960 I had a 1941 Buick Super with compound carburetors and at WOT I got 95 mph.

When i was a kid I used to like to play in my uncles 39 buick. Then noticed the speedometer went up to 120 mph. Later on I looked at a 41 Cadillac, and it only went to 115. Wow , well that sold me on Buicks. Actually the straight 8's were kinda low geared and at 60 or 70 mph they are spinning up a lotta R,s. Changing the rear gearing to a 3:50 or 3:60 will do wonders for cruisisng.

    I m afraid over 60 , so it seems a 263 will fit my needs :P
    I once had a 1932 bike , running 45 mph with it was a strange experience ..,..
