If I remember correctly the stem that the knob attaches to is screwed into the signal light switch. Remove the stem & soak the plastic in hot water & it will come off.
I realize sounds really dumb...Is it possible to remove this directional knob without breaking it? The knob itself spins as though it was threaded but won't come off that way. There is not a set screw. Application of vice grips and gentle pull isn't working. I'd really rather not have to destroy it to get it off.
Is these a trick to this? There's nothing in the manual about it.

So...I need to remove the steering wheel just to get the knob off?
Grrrrrrrr..Dunno if keeping it intact is really worth the PITA.
So... what's wrong with the existing knob? It looks OK to me in your pictures, or do you want to stick on one of those green ones that you have on the heater controls?

If your car used the same technique as was used in my 62 Buick, I used a heat gun to gently heat up the knob. It had to get quite hot to touch, I then used gloves to pull it off the stem. To refit I had to use the same method. The stem had a series of ridges that lock the knob in place but are not a "screw" type arrangement. My lever simply unscrewed but I think yours may be held in with a screw under the steering wheel?

Thanks brb62! The heat gun worked like a charm and the knob came off. So now all my lucite teardrops are installed and it looks great....Now to decide upon the suspension mods...static drop or bags????? Hmmmmmmm....
On my 52 it requires removal of the steering wheel and then you can get to an allen head screw and tighten it up. Perfect time to realign your steering wheel.
The stem is actually threaded. The knob was probably just stripped , so it didn't want to come off. Heat gun solved that very nicely.
