Thread: How slow or fast is your starter on 6V ?

How slow or fast is your starter on 6V ?

    Hi all,

My 46 Super 4 door is stock and runs the stock starter with stock 6V electrical system.

    The battery is new.

The starter cranks the engine very slowly. It does start the engine but I feel its cranking speed is very slow.

I have only had the car a short while and it has been this way all along.

Been watching a few vids of 42 - 48 Buick on YouTube and all of them seem to have their starters working REAL FAST in comparison to mine but then again some or all of them may be running the old 6V starter on a 12V battery.

Does anyone feel inclined to make a video clip of their 6V car being started up and posting it on YouTube ?

I got tired of my 51 Buick has leaving me stranded more than once with a full charged battery so I hid a 12v motorcycle battery inside the front wheel well of my Super hardtop and two wires to the starter motor. Now when the starter gets sluggish I just hit the button under the dash and it fires right up.

Proper size cables are very important

6 volt systems need LARGE battery cables to carry enough juice to spin the starter at a reasonable speed. I recommend 00 cables.

Usually you can find these at truck or tractor supply stores. I made my own out of welding cable as it is much more flexible than regular battery cable.

Mine are made from welding cable too.

I'm just wondering if my starter is working fine or if it should be cranking faster.

Any of you guys have a video clip of your car cranking up ?

    Battery cranking .

I have owned my 41 buick special (original) since 2001 ,started out with a new 2E 6v interstate 900 cc battery .Motor cranked over slow ,had the rebuilt stock (excited to install to see how fast turn over) .No difference-this past 2 months have been awsome because bought a new 3E battery 6v 900 cc (for only $87 compaired to the 2E that cost $150 ) it is only 3/4 " taller . I extended the holding threaded rods -great fit now this battery cranks ,been driving the car for months now still anytime cranks fast . I think I had a dead cell in my old battery and it was always dragging it down on juice . Good luck

    Guys watch these videos

Ok guys... I'm still not clearer as to if my starter is cranking my engine as it should or not.

Can you guys please watch these videos and tell me if your stock 6V starter and 6V battery, cranks your engine as fast as in these videos ?

    starter

You may have to check your timming or something else besides your starter , I remember my 41 biuck was way advanced when I got it / cheaters way to make points last a little longer . You may try a 6 volt battery charger on start up that will let you know if the battery is weak or maybe dead cell .think wider span than just the starter ,like posted in the ads above just a bad cable can make you starter stink for cranking the motor over. Goodluck
