    231 v6 engine ID by the numbers questions

    Gentlemen, I have a 1931 model A panel with a Buick 231-TH350 powertrain. I am trying to identify the year, make and model car the engine came from.

    the casting # at the back of the block is 25506397
    below the number in about this location are A1 2

    the serial number from the pad by the water pump right side front is
    2AP574191

    I've wandered all over this site and can't find this info. A push in the right direction is appreciated.

    I'm also looking to swap out the original 2v intake manifold and carb for a small 4v setup. I've found an Offenhauser 360 manifold and am thinking of an Edelbrock 600 cfm carb, detuned a bit to go with it.

    Any suggestions, comments, pittfalls

    Thanks, Gregg

    unfortunately, we don't have a whole lot on the v6 stuff.

    partly because, when we buy books, they tend to segregate the info by v8 and v6.

    if this decoded as like the older EIN's, it would be something like this

    2 = Pontiac
    A = 1980
    P = Pontiac Michigan
    574191 = sequential production number, matches last 6 digits of VIN

    http://service.gm.com/dealerworld/vi.../vincard80.pdf

    that would make this an "A" or "K" code engine in the VIN, although that information isn't coded if that's the way this number works.

    Thanks Bob for the EIN decoding info.
    Knowing I have a 1980 Pontiac makes the parts search easier' Thanks again!

    Is there any way you know of to determine the Pontiac model this engine came from with the EIN and casting numbers?

    casting numbers have nothing to do with the car model, those are specific to the molds used for the cast iron parts on the block.

    it also doesn't appear as though any model information or even engine configuration information is found in the EIN.

    the only thing i can suggest is looking for a 1980 RWD Pontiac that would have come with a 2 barrel v6. wiki might be useful for this.

    it appears that the H-body cars were available with the 231 in 1980:

    Thanks, Bob
    I'll take your advice and find a 1980 Pontiac, rwd, 2bbl, and use it when I go after engine parts
