Thread: Removing my 8 in a row!

  1. #1

Removing my 8 in a row!

I found a new rebuilt straight eight so it's time to take the original out and have that rebuilt for later.
I was wondering if anyone knows the best way to chain the hoist to the engine? What bolts or how should it be done?

I am hoping to pull the tranny with it, fenders and front clip are off the car (1940 super). Any help is greatly appreciated as I don't want to get myself into any irreversable problems!

    Thanks

I just went thru this with my 263. I didnt know what mounting points where strong enough to use. So I made grade 8 "eye bolts" to use in place of four headbolts. Two in the front and two in the rear. Worked great, I can send you pics if you send me your email.

Thanks. My email is iepsr@yahoo.com mine is the 248 but should be the same as far as removal is concerned. You made bolts?? Thanks.

Yes your 248 is dimensionally the same as a 263. Yes I went to my local fastner shop and bought grade eight bolts and weldable lifting eyes. Ground the bolt head flat and welded the eye to the bolt. Perfect lifting point

Got the pics, looks really good. I'm gonna try that. Hey does the tranny just pull off the drive shaft once you have unbolted all the mounting bolts?

Yes once they are unbolted it slides off a splined shaft. There are 5 bolts for the driveline flange. remove those. Then I removed the 8 bolts and nuts that hold the crossmember to the X frame and let the crossmember come out with the trans. I did that because the rubber trans mounts were shot plus i had 60 yrs of grease and grim to remove from the crossmember. Bobs Automobilia has all the new mounts as well as the new updated driveline ball seal kit also.

Thank you for all the pictures they really help! In regards to the eye bolts that you made, do you know what the size and thread was to match to the head? Thanks again for all of your help.
