How to know the year of your Engine

I have a buick skylark 1966 and after running the block #'s I now know that my engine was built from 68-77 and its a 350 v8 , my question is on both sides of the exhast manifold upper area of the block you can see the numbers 74 so is this the year that the engine was built ? anyone know for sure? If I go to the pepboys and get oil filter what type of car do i have ? 74 gm motor ???

    74 gm motor ?

NO! they will probably try to hand you a filter for a Chevy 350. do not want.

you'll want a filter for a 1974 Buick 350, which is a very different thing from a Chevy.

    you could also probably use a filter for a 1977-89 231 v6.

probably. the best way to tell is with the two letter Engine Code. if it's truly a '74, your EC will be ZB, ZC, ZM or ZP.

this will also tell you the factory rated power output in it's original installation.
