    alternatives for 69 Skylark rotors

    Gents,
My Skylark used to be a drag car with the previous owner. I'm turning it into a street car. It has manual Wilwood disc brakes in frt and stock drums in rear. The mechanic told me the disc rotors are horribly undersized and that's why it is so hard to stop the car (you have to drive with two feet basically and pump the brakes). He said rear drums and shoes are fine and adjusted as best they can be, he thinks it's the small rotors. I was wondering what is a good bolt in rotor i can get from the local parts store that will be bigger and provide more stopping power and would that work with the wilwood calipers? if not, can i grab the calipers and rotors from a junkyard 70's-80's Caprice or Van or something like that? Thx in advance

I'm looking into using rotors from an Astro van - I think they are 12".

soon as the rain quits, I'm going to the yard to look at them.

I have the Scarebird conversion kit for my 64 LeSabre.

    will keep you posted

Are you sure you have a good vacuum booster? low vac will cause the need to drive with two feet.
Put An LS1 in it and go!

We run manual disc with aluminum master cylinder on our race car and it does great, very streetable. We have factory front disc and rear drum. You will need to find some factory A body disc to fit your car, to my knowledge. You can get aftermarket disc conversions from some vendors, even from ebay.

You might want to go back to a factory vacuum brake booster for your car if you don't like the manual.

a vacuum guage on the intake will tell you if you have a leak. the hose from the manifold to the booster might be leaking at either end.

    then the bad news;
Buick stock 15" rims won't fit around 12" rotors.
lug pattern is the same, spindle fits flush with the
rim, but no room for the caliper.

anyone know if the Wildcat or LeSabre will take
    16"s up front?

    darn.....

There are 15" GM wheels that will fit around GM 12" rotors and calipers. The 79 Olds front brakes I used were 12" rotors with single piston calipers and 15" 5 on 5 bolt circle wheels. I only used the spindles and calipers from the Olds. Went with 12" Camaro rotors to have the 5 on 4 3/4" bolt circle and 15" Rally wheels.

To fit disc brake applications the wheel has to be flat on the inside all the way to the center.

Thanks for checking on those Astro van brakes. I didn't mention it but it is manual brakes, no booster to have to worry about vac pressure.
