You need at least a 0 gauge cable for a 6 volt. anything smaller will result in very poor starter operation.
I have a 52 roadmaster that was found on a farm that hasn't ran in who knows how long. I am replacing the positive battery cable. Most 12-volt autos run a 4 gauge. I found a 2 gauge. Is this big enough for the 6-volt system? Anyone know the factory size? Thanks, Matt.

Anyone know where i can find 0 gauge battery cables? I have found 1 gauge at tractor supply but no zero. I noticed that cars inc sells a 2 gauge as a replacement.
Also my braided ground (negative cable) is 2 gauge also. It is the same size as the one that came off the car. Would i have to change this also or will it work if i decide to go to 0 gauge? Thanks, Matt.
You don't need to change the earth cable. It's only earthing out; if it's not on corroded metal it should be fine.
I made my own starter cable (I'm in the UK) as I couldn't find a suitable replacement. I bought some sheathed twisted copper wire cable approx 12mm wide and soldered connections on at both ends.
I also heartily recommend Optimax Spiral Cell 6v batteries. Expensive but well worth it.

Thats cool. I have a new braided 2g ground strap i will use.
I think i am going to buck up and get a oo or ooo cable from custom battery cables soon. First i will try the 2 ga i bought just to see if the old girl shows any promise and will run.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED...I went to my local caterpillar dealer and they made me up a positive cable that is 00 awt. I'm sure this will do the trick. Now,,, if i can only get this farm found to car to run. I have alot of work ahead of me. This thing hasn't ran in 20-30 years.
I suggest not messing around and going with the OO cable size first. The worst thing you can do with a 6 volt system is run wires that are too light.
