I know this is not what you asked but, if it's a Special I would be interested in the transmission if he decides to sell.
My neighbor has a 1938 Buick with a straight 8, manual trans, and stock rear axle, and is contemplating selling the entire power train to make a hot rod out of the car. I have heard the engine run, and for 70+ years old, it sounds pretty darn good. He tells me he is pretty sure it only has under 40K miles on the car. Any idea of the value of these parts? My guess is that he would like to sell the 3 components as a lot.

Tell him to hot rod it WITH the straight 8!
what model is it?----- If its a century its aleady a hot rod!
Contentious I know but I think it's always a shame when a solid original car gets rodded. Feel free to flame away

Well, believe it or not I agree. This car does need a lot of rust repair, but the man had his own auto repair business in a locale that is ripe with hot rods and magazine cover-worthy cars. He has his sights set on front-halving the car and installing a late model Chevy front end with 350 and all the modern running gear. He had a stroke about 2 years ago, and still works on all the cars himself. His son and I have both tried to convince him to sell the Buick and get something more recent to hotrodize, but he has a vision I guess. He has, however, had this car for several years without changing the power train, so who knows...there still may be hope for the big blue (or is it black?) Buick.
