    430 Header question...

I bought this car from someone who raced 430s and 455s in the 70s. He said if I cant afford some T/A headers, to just remove mine and sand blast the crap out of them, then run new exhaust Is this a legitimate idea? Is it worth the hassle, or just drive it as-is until I can call T/A? If it helps any, the car is a 68 Electra and the Cherry bomb glasspack has already been ordered, as has the turn down. My muffler was trashed.

Ill try this again...it is a legitimate question. Lets try again. Take 2.

First thing to say, this isnt a muscle car or a supercar.
It is a low budget build 1968 Buick Electra 225.
I have heard that I have two choices about headers. One is to remove my stock ones and sandblast the crap out of them and run new pipes back, and the other is to go to T/A Performance for some 430 headers.
The problem with the latter option is their headers cost more than I paid for the car.
    Comments/ideas are greatly appreciated.

If it's just a driver, and you are having fun with it, then don't worry about headers.
I don't know why you would need to sandblast the stock manifolds. That won't help performance. Put a true duel exhaust with an X pipe and you should be happy.

Ive seen alot of people do the true dual with these cars. I didnt know why about the sandblasting either. But then again, he was old and senile. It will never race, but it has to be able to show off the big block too, haha. Im young. My daily driver is dumped under the cab. I like loudness. My last 4dr Electra I just chopped the exhaust and mounted a cherrybomb glasspack under the back seat. It was better than it was before, just not quite enough.

maybe someone can answer this question for me...

what is the benifit of the "X" cross pipe. I ran straight pipes from the maniforlds to the flowmasters, then to the tailpipes that i brought out in front of the rear wheels.... that's on my Wildcat with the 455.

I'd planned to do the same with the LeSabre's 310, cept extend the tailpipe to the rear bumper.

I understand that "porting" the manifold (lay the exhaust manifold gasket on the manifold, ink in all the area of the metal that is exposed inside the gasket, and grind the metal down to match the gasket) improves the volumn of exhaust that exits the exhaust ports.

I plan to do this with the 310 - I think the header pipe is only 2".

I'm kinda concerned with reducing the back pressure.

    any thots?
    thanks
    Butch

X pipes are pretty much like H pipes it's suppose to help your low end torque by equalizing exhaust pressure (between left & right bank). X pipes are suppose to flow a little better though, (arguable). Gasket porting is "easy" HP and relatively free if u do it yourself. IMO it does help.
