Thread: Generator Light Question

    Generator Light Question

New question! My "Gen" light won't turn off. I just put a new battery cable on it and the battery is new also. I really don't have any measurement meters, is there anything I can do to troubleshoot the generator/alternator?

your car should run without the battery if the alternator is OK. start it up and remove the battery cables.

you might have a direct positive short to ground - you are going to need some sort of volt meter. they're only $6 $10. you would lift the ground wire and put the voltmeter between a solid ground and the negative post on the battery. if you have a short, you will get a reading.

I've had a brake light socket short to ground and the ignition wire short to the starter.

does the battery drain down overnight?

you CAN - make a test light using a 12v bulb. strip the ends of a piece of wire, wrap the metal of the bulb with a length of the bare wire, connect the other end to the - battery post (with the ground cable removed), and touch the + post on the bulb to part of the block or frame

that's all I can think of right now

I pulled the positive lead off, and the engine went dead instantly.

You should NEVER remove the battery cable from a running engine when using an alternator. It usually kills the diodes. If not your lucky. A generator yes, it's OK.
