Thread: 1959 Buick LeSabre Engine Interchangeability ????

Exclamation 1959 Buick LeSabre Engine Interchangeability ????

I just got a 59 Buick that came with a 'so called' low milage 364 Nailhead engine and Dynaflow trans.

After 7 bent pushrods, exploded lifter and a stuck valve, pulled the heads and there is a ridge in the cylinder the depth of a fingernail; I have determined the motor no good. The sad part is; I never got to hear the engine run. That's what you get when buying over the net.

Anyways, with hopes of looking forward in a positive nature I had a few questions.

Question #1: What is the allowable wear on the cylinders before a bore is necessary? This motor I believe to be a Standard Bore; Original.

Question #2: I am assuming the trans is good (clean fluids and I was told the Prev. Owner said he drove it up and around his neighborhood ) and I have an option to get a good 401 motor and transmission out of a low milage 61 Electra 225. Will the 401 bolt up to my 1959 Dynaflow trans?

    Thanks.

364's and 401's have the same diameter bell housing so the trans should bolt up. There are differences that may or may not be applicable to this swap. The oil pans, may be a rear sump or center sump; oil filter housings, starter bolt holes. You'll need to compare and use which ever one is applicable. To swap from a 364 to a 401, you'll need the intake, water crossover, and anything else that has to do with the increased deck height of the 401.
