Thread: Nailhead dual exhaust factory manifolds?

    Nailhead dual exhaust factory manifolds?

    I got a pair of "rare" exhaust manifolds with a 401 Nailhead and the guy said they were factory dual exhaust manifolds. I can't find any info on these manifolds and the only casting numbers I can find don't match up with any of those listed in the reference section. Hopefully someone can tell what I have exactly and give some information on them. The numbers are 135324C-2 (right side) and 1171371 (left side). Here's a quick picture of what I'm talking about. Thanks.

    I think someone has you duped with some fandangling verbage calling them "factory dual exhaust" manifolds. The fact is any manifolds can be dual exhaust as each manifold comes off each head, so in esccence all V-8 manifolds are actually "dual". The exhaust either stays seperate keeping them dual or joining them together making them single exhaust. Make sense?

    There are rare factory nailhead manifolds that had "D" shaped ports. As a matter of fact, I think there are at least about 4 different configurations for the exhaust manifolds as you go through the years. Russ Martin posted all of them with photos and casting numbers on the Yahoo newsgroup a while back. Or you might giving him a call, and he can help you.

    Just as another thought.. are you sure they are 401/425 nailhead manifolds?

    More importantly... what is this going in? There may be some fit issues around the steering box/and or suspension. As far as performance, why not headers anyway?

    noooooope... I found the reference to the rare d port manifolds here:
    http://v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=...highlight=port

    ...but comparing your casting numbers to the photos in the link, they don't match anyway.

    let me clarify...

    I apologize for not explaining myself better. I completely understand that any V8 or any other multi-head engine has what could be called "dual" exhaust manifolds....it just matters how you hook up the exhaust pipe to the manifolds. My question was whether or not these particular manifolds are something "special". The guy I got these from said he bought them, along with a factory manual bell housing, flywheel/clutch assembly, and dual carb intake from a Buick speed shop in Florida (got their number/name at home). He said the exhaust manifolds were actually more difficult to find than the factory manual bell housing/flywheel. I know the factory manual tranny stuff for 401/425's are kinda tough to find, so that made me curious about these manifolds. I run custom headers on my stuff 'cause I'm not restoring anything, so I don't know anything about factory exhaust manifolds other than they're heavy. Just trying to find out more info before I offer them for sale.

    The right manifold looks pretty normal...like the ones on my other engines, but the left manifold dumps in the middle, which is different than any of the ones I have. All my left manifolds look like a log, dumping in line out the back of the manifold. Is that what makes these special???

    There is a set of the most common manifolds for the 364/401/425 in this link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Pair-...Q5fAccessories. Yours seem different. Do they have round or rectangular ports? the earlier nailheads (264/322) had round ports.
