I am in the process of removing the engine on my 52 Buick wagon. I have disconnected everything from under the car and top. However I do not know how to disengage the transmission from the drive shaft and rear axle. This is the first time I am attempting to remove an engine. I want to pull engine and transmission together.
Any tips, Thanks

I read the shop manual but can't really understand the procedure. It pretty much states to separate the drive shaft and rear axle...how?
I just had the transmission out of my 56 wagon. If yours is anything like mine, remove the bolts around the torque ball at the end of the transmission. It is the flanged connection at the end of the torque tube. The end of the drive shaft inside the torque tube is splined and extends into the rear of the transmission. I had to pull the rear axle backwards 4-6 inches to get the splined shaft out of the transmission. If you pull the engine out with the transmission attached, it should just slide off the splined shaft. The only other things to remove are the transmission linkage and cross member support. Good luck.
At the back of the transmission is a round housing with bolts all around it, INCLUDING ONE YOU CANNOT SEE AT THE VERY TOP. When these come out the housing comes apart revealing the slip joint. As you pull the engine forward, the drive shaft should stay stationary, and allow engine and transmission to come out as a unit.
Guys, thanks a lot. Great help.
