62 Skylark gas line problems?

Hi everybody,

We just took ownership of a 62 skylark and on the first drive of more than a mile she started to splutter then the engine cut out about 5 miles in. When we tried to restart it it fired up for about a minute then died again. After that it would fire and then die.

There is a fuel filter in the line immediately before the carb - this doesn't seam to be getting more than a squirt of gas as it turns over.

It seems to be a problem in the fuel line somewhere, any suggestions on how to start troubleshooting?

There is a 'sock' on the pickup tube in the gas line- which surely has deteriorated by now. Possibly plugged up there or has migrated to block the fuel pump or maybe your pump is shot. Check the bleed hole- if it's wet, it's not pumping sufficiently. I assume you've replaced the filter or tried to run without it?

try blowing compressed air back through to the tank(not through the Pump,though!), tank side of pump. If the Screen sock in the tank is clogged, this will solve the problem for a while without removing the tank. If the problem goes away, THEN do a permament service on the tank.

Thanks for your advice! turns out that the simple solution shouldn't have been overlooked! after a few minutes of "what are we overlooking" we found the gas gauge doesn't work and it was simply a matter of out of gas.....atleast now we know, and the fix was about as cheap as you get!
