    Stage-1 455 build help plzzz?

Recently scored a 1974 455 Stage-1. Dropped it at the machine shop
today and am pondering what I should do regarding the build. Save the Stage-1 and do a stock rebuild or forgetaboutit and just build it??
    Anyone??

If you "just rebuild" the heads, they are stage 1. If you put forged pistons in the block, it will be stage 1. You will probably put a cam with at least stage 1 performance back in it.

Here is a link to a good book:

STOP! Please, please please please please tell the machine shop what clearances to use.

For example: Most machine shops figure that 0.004" is a good clearance for your main bearings. WRONG! For a Buick, you want more like 0.002", depending on your application. Same with the rod bearings.

THIS IS NOT A CHEVY!!! DO NOT LET THEM USE "STANDARD" CLEARANCES!

For things like piston clearance and ring end gap, they can go ahead and think like a Chevy. But not for clearances!

Are they going to rebuild your oil pump? If so, make sure they ignore the end clearance that is in their "standard" manual, it is too big.

With regards to the question about keeping it a Stage I, there is no real value to keeping it a stock Stage I motor unless it is in the original car with numbers matching. For your application, I'd go ahead and build it up! Feel free to use a somewhat bigger cam and port the heads, if those options are within your budget...
