    64 300 teardown and inspection

I have a 64 Skylark with the original 300 and the PO said it was seized when he bought it(~2000). The car has not been on the road since 1987.

The lower end of the hose from the top of the water pump to the choke is broken off and blown open an inch or two above the joint. There's no oil on the dipstick either.

Is this engine worth tearing down to investigate the condition? Parts?

It is a rare engine, but not in demand. The 64 had aluminum heads and an aluminum intake (64 only). Yours looks to be the low compression 2 bbl. All you woud need is a set of higher compression pistoms and a 64 aluminum 4 bbl intake to have everything the high output 300 had that year. If it is stuck you would need new pistins and a bore anyway. IT would be worth a look inside to me.

    Thanks.

I'll take a look once I get it out.

    Definitely worth a look

Those heads can be used on the earlier 215's, and flow much better. Also, the crank in that 300 can be reground to stroke a 215. It's definitely worth a look inside, if for nothing else than to sell the desirable parts to us 215 guys.

    Parts

The 300 is a great little motor and they moved the skylark/specials around pretty quickly since they weighed so little. Always worth a look inside after all its free to look. ebbsspeed/slider if your looking for '64 300 parts PM me.

If your'e interested, I have a "Complete" 300 in pieces ready for building. It's laying on my garage floor. I bought it as an extra parts motor and didn't need any parts. It's got alum. heads and alum. intake.

I'll be pulling it out within the next week or so. Once it's pulled, I'll clean it up a bit and assess the damage.

The plan is to replace it with an 87 Turbo intercooled six I have laying around.

I was wondering if it is worth rebuilding and throwing a set of iron heads on it for later use?

Rebuild it and use a turbo on that one!

BTW -Once removed, the motor, trans, gas tank, and rear will be up for grabs..anyone interested?

Not sure of the value, but I'm open to "reasonable" offers.
