Thread: picking a torque converter?

  1. #1

    picking a torque converter?

buick 430 with just cam headers intake and bigger valves, are the upgrades.

i am wondering what converter would get me the most performance.

We need to know the cam specefications and if it has any advance ground into it. Then it would be good to know the weight, compression ratio, rear gear ratio, header size, exhaust size, tire size/type, and carburetor. Then we can make an educated guess!

The cam duration @ .050"and lift are needed as well. Centerlines and lobe seperation are also critical. Is there a part number from Comp that can be used to look up the specifications, or do you have the cam card handy?

If you are talking about this cam: http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/Ca...x?csid=44&sb=2, then you shold be OK with the stock converter (or a 2500 RPM stall converter at most).

That cam is a little bigger then the one i was thinking you have. You will need a 2500-3000 stall converter (closer to 3000 if you can afford the loss in efficiency below 3000 rpm). It is close to this cam. Your dynamic compression ratio (DCR) with that cam would be about 8.1:1 with a 10:1 static compression ratio as you planned. That means you will need good pump gas (93 octane min) and will need to be careful how much total ignition timing you run. You would have a little more room for error with that cam if you ran a static compression ratio closer to 9.5:1. That would give you a 7.75:1 dynamic compression ratio, and that is a very safe DCR for pump gas engines.
