    Dyna Flow

Hey I new to Buicks and I bought a 65 Wildcat it has a 401 and a Dyna Flow tranny but from what I can find about the car it should have a 400 tranny is this right?

Yes Glen, It should have a ST 400 transmisssion with a variable pitch converter. I would bet the engine was replaced as well, or the transmission was replaced because the engine was replaced. That dynaflow only fits 57-63 Nailheads easily. Fitting the dynaflow to a 64-66 nailhead reqires swaping the crank.

Check the referrence section on this site to identify the engine. There are engine codes there that tell the year, size, compression and carb type of the engine.

Awsome thanks I was getting confused, I checked the block numbers and it came up as 64-66 401-425 I checked the casting mark on the block and it is a 401 but now I'm wondering about the tranny I can get a 70's Riv with a 455 for a motor would that have the st 400 tranny or am I better to stick with the dyna flow.

    Glen,

The 70 455 trans will not fit the Nailhead (it has a BOP bell-housing bolt pattern). The 57-66 Nailhead (364,401,425) has a unique bell housing bolt pattern. Only a transmission with a Nailhead bolt patten will fit the Nailhead (without expensive adapters). Three automatic transmissions were casted in versions that had a Nailhead bolt pattern: Dynaflow, ST 400 and ST 300. You may want to verify the trans in your car by the tag on the side just to be sure you don' have a ST 400 already. There are ST 400 codes as well on the site.

Of course, another option is to consider yourself fortunate and keep the dynaflow. I sure liked mine.

One way to tell for sure if it is a dynaflow is if the trans shift pattern is P N D L R.
