    96 regal gs 3.8 engine

The engine runs good and gets good mpg. After running and stopping several times the engine will turn over and refuse to start. Luckily I have been able to start it eventually by keeping the key turned and pumping the gas pedal, not to the floor, continually. I have replaced the MAF, MAP and PCV valve. No other codes have been produced. The mechanic now suspects Fuel pump but can't say for sure it is the problem other than one time he got it to die and the Fuel pressure was low. But it continues to operate as it should. Any suggestions please....???? Should I replace the pump? Thanks

I've got a '94 Park Ave that is having a similar problem. The guys I know that are experienced with these say that it is probably the ignition module. I haven't replaced it yet 'cause it's been damn cold out and I haven't had time. So far mine has always started after awhile. If it turns out that you are having low fuel pressure, you might replace the filter first as they can restrict flow when needing changed and might be the problem.

I'd say your mechanic is right on. (...fuel pressure was low) Better to change the pump AND filter now on your schedule than have your car towed in some cold day when you're not in the mood to screw around. I've had the fuel pump 2x, the coil pack once, and the ignition module go bad 3x on my '91 PA Ultra. (almost 300,00 miles) Driving down the road when the pump gives out, the engine sputters for a while before it dies. Driving down the road when the module or coil pack goes bad, it's like you turned the ignition key to "off". A word to the wise: when replacing your pump, don't go bargain basement shopping. Get a good one from your Buick dealer or from a place like NAPA,because it's a job you don't want to do over again.

FWIW, pumping the gas on EFI cars doesn't help them start.
