Thread: Loud howling noise just got worse.

Loud howling noise just got worse.

New guy here but i'm lookin for some help. Recently my '55 Special (264) started making this whine/howl noise from what sounds like the transmission. It would start off quiet when driving and get louder after about 30 mins. It only did it when pressing down on the accelerator.

Last night I took the car out for a short drive and now whenever I let off the gas there's a loud metal scraping sound...give it gas and it goes away. I've never experienced something like this so does anyone have any suggestions?

Possibly motor/tranny mounts worn out causing something to get out of whack?

    '55 Noise

Check out the rear differential. 1955s were noted for having weak rear ends.

Even though the noise is coming from the front half of the car?

Crazy question - - - could it be the starter trying to engage?...... I eliminated the throttle pedal starter switch (put in a momentary chrome switch on the right hand side of the dash board) because I was getting some attempts by the starter to enage while driving, sometimes when pushing down and sometimes when letting off on the throttle.............

You know that might be possible. I have a relocated switch as well. The noise is gone now though so I can't really peg where it was coming from. Go figure.

I can't imagine any way that a starter could accidentally engage with a pushbutton unless the wiring is REALLY bad and one hot wire is shorting against another hot wire. It wouldn't take long to wreck the starter under those conditions in any case. I think I'd look somewhere else.
