    455 starter issue

I have a starter for a 1970 455, and the bendix will not disengage after running, I dont know if it is a shimming problem or an electrical problem. Has anyone else had a problem similar to this, or possibly have an idea what the problem is?

    Thanks.

Hi, did you have a look in the Ref* section at the shop manual for 70'/71', it should help you diagnose and care your issue....
    Good luck!

The '71 shop manual is in the "Library" near the bottom of the "Reference" index page.

If the starter is new and you just put it in, then it is probably either a shim problem or maybe you didn't get the wires on the relay correctly and you are supplying 12v to the S terminal with the key in run position.

    Wink

First,as Bob said make sure your getting power to "S" terminal ONLY when the key is in the crank position. Also if the snap-ring & collar on the armature shaft is missing/broken,the bendix will travel too far on the splines & lock out.Buicks NORMALLY dont require any shimming, thats a chebby problem.
