67 GS 400 Rear End Woes

Hi all, I'm a newbie. Got a 1967 triple black GS 400 Convt with A/C about 9 years ago and I seem to have blown the original rear end. My fault and I won't get into the details. Gear teeth broken but I don't know to what extent the rear is unusable or repairable. Spider gears are broken. I put a used Skylark rear end on the car so I can use it and have my original sitting out on blocks.

Anyway, I want to repair my original because I want to keep the car completely original. Can someone make suggestions on how a mechanically declined individual such as myself can repair this this.

The most work I have done is rebuilt the entire front end, rear breaks, replaced a water pump and swaped rear axles. However, I'm not too stupid.

    Thanks.

You may want to call Jim M. /or email- I can never find a phone #)

he does good work on Buick rears as well as others.

it looks like you have some special needs there. IMHO
if that much broke, you probably need a new carrier and
new gears in the original housing. Jim can help.
I'd love to see some pics and hear more about the 67!

If you just need to drop in another set of spider gears, its easy. The bigges ouch with them is the outer bearings. They are no longer available except for big $.

    Here's what I did:

The proceedure is in the shop manual which you will find in the "Reference" section under "Library".

Thanks guys. Outer bearings? Didn't even think about those.

    Great idea with the magnet.

The outer pinion barings should be M86649 brg and M86610 race, Inner pinion brg Hm89449 and HM89410 race. The outer pinion seal is 8620N. Rear wheel bearings should be RW-507-CR Federal Mogul number. These are based on a 10 bolt rearend.
If you have an 8.875" ring gear. The inner bearing-race combo is M804049-M804010 outer bearing-race combo M88048-M88010 Seal 8460N and sppedi sleeve for the seal 99170.
The differential bearings call for two each of LM501349 brg and LM501314 race.

Hope this helps with the bearing part of it.

    mrbuik,

The GS400 and the station wagon use a larger outer axle bearing than standard. Looking at my little article, it appears that I may have the same number for both the GS bearing and the standard bearing as the same. This is wrong. If you can find a number for the larger bearing, I will modify my article.

    Thanks,

Bob, the rear wheel bearing part number in the article is close!
66 -68 GS and Sportwagon used the RW 507G bearing. If it comes with the retainer, the pn would be RW 507GR.
1965 GS's use a RW 507A bearing, and the standard Skylarks use a RW 507A.

The Oil seal is a unique pn as well..... GM #1376776
A modern replacement is SKF #14088. Avail from O'Reilly's.
