    Cool Information Wanted

A friend of mine without a computer maintains that he has a 425 nailhead engine out of a 1964 Riveria. At least that is the car that the engine was in when it was taken out. He says that the transmission is a 64-65 turbo 400 with a lo and hi for forward. You start in low then when you shift into high it internally shifts into 2nd and then into high. I am unfamiliar with this set up so thought I would ask the question. Does this sound correct?

to explicate slightly, the ST-400 is a factory switch-pitch version of the TH-400.

1964 is the 1st. year for the Buick TH400 & it WAS NOT SWITCH-PITCH. Switch-pitch came out in '65 & '66 for the NailHeads & then one year only for the '67's with the BOP bolt pattern. All TH400's can be made into a switch-pitch except for the '64 Unit. The '64 unit is stand alone. Although all parts internally are the same. The case & valve body are different. The '64 unit is a 3 speed just as the '65 & up units are. You put the gearshift lever in low, accelerate to the desired speed/RPM ( above 25 MPH) & shift to D then immediately back to low to hold 2nd. gear. Accelerate to the desired speed/RPM & shift back to D for 3rd.
