1970 engines have both a smaller combustion chamber and less of a dish in the piston.
that's just CR ratio though. there's a lot of stuff you can do before you get into rebuilding the motor.
have you taken the cats off?
full dual exhaust?
recurve your timing?
full tune-up?
if you want to spend some money, the best bang for the buck would be a cam and TA Performance aluminum heads.
also, remember that the 74 engine was rated in SAE Net HP while part of the reason the 1970 engine looks so much better is because of the Gross HP rating. that's probably worth 40hp just in the different rating methodologies.
