This may seem like a dumb thing to do. Put a pint of dot3 brake fluid in. What it will do is help to swell & soften the seals a little. If it doesn't work your out the cost of brake fluid.

I have a '62 Invicta with a 401 and a 2 speed (Powerglide, Dynaflow? It's stock!) transmission. Recently it started spewing transmission fluid from what appears to be where the bell housing meets the engine. From what I can see it only leaks if I start it and put it in gear. It's leaving a huge puddle of fluid every time.
Can anyone help me diagnose this or give me advice on repairs?
Thanks in advance.

I'd read another post with that recommendation, but somehow I think the leak might be a bit too bad for it to work. I'm probably losing a quart every 10 minutes, which tells me a swollen seal may not do a lot. Correct me if I'm wrong, of course.
Does anyone know what might be the cause?
could be the front seal on the trans..
witch means pulling the trans out ..
Based on what I've read so far, I think you're right.
What parts do I need for the job? Is there anything else I could/should do while the transmission is dropped (mounts/other seals that are prone to failure/u-joints etc)?
Thanks!
Most automatics have some sort of vent or vent tube on them, usually up high on the case. Make sure that it's not plugged or smashed. That can lead to internal pressure that can push fluid out. Probably not your exact problem, but something to check. Front seal sounds most likely. Make sure that you lube the heck out of the seal before you stick the converter back in to prevent a "dry lip" type of failure on the new seal.
