Duesy, you REALLY want to hop over to the str8 forum and click on "to alleycat" and "whats new with the str8 hot rodders" threads. These places will give you more than enough to think over for a good while. alleycat

okay, so it drives me crazy that we don't have accessible records.

the Buicks.net page says that the Buick 8 family starts in 1937 ... but the Carnuts page says that there was a valve-in-head 320 in 1936 and that Buick had valve in head Str8's going back to 1931. can someone splain this to me please?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buick_Straight-8_engine
it's also obvious that the Wiki page is fairly well fubar'd right now. it doesn't even mention the 248, much less the wild variety between 1931-36 ( i see 221, 230, 233, 235, 273, 278 and 345 just glancing through ). worse, it miscalculates the 263's displacement.

so, here's what i've got for tentatively compiled info right now:
    Eng......Actual........Bore.......Stroke......Serv ice.....Length
    320......320.18.....3.4375.....4.3125.....1936-52......35"
    263......263.33.....3.1875.....4.1250.....1950-53......31"
    248......248.08.....3.0938.....4.1250.....1937-50......31"

it's interesting to compare service lives and look at the varying overlap between the different size engines and where the Nail took over.

so i'm putting all of this into the furburger.xls, if anybody can get me bore spacing, deck heights, rod lengths, etc i'll add that in.

is that measurement for the valve cover or bell housing to fan or what?

    straight 8

    Bob K Mando,
I'll try to get some more precise lengths for the 320 tomorrow. It's 3 degrees outside right now and I can't hold the flashlight and the tape at the same time. 35 is just the number that I use in the salvage yard to separate the little engine from the big one. I think there is also something about the ID numbers being in front of and behind the distributor that separates them. [Don't know that for sure]. Doug

You guys have been great helping a newbie. Is it safe to say that all Roadmasters, Centurys, and Limiteds had the 320 ci engine? And that all Supers and Specials had smaller displacement motors?

According to a 1954 buick parts book, the 8 started in 1931. I believe there was a major change in 1936. It could have been something like smaller motors and Cubic inches.

    Bob,
Where on Buicks.net was it notice to have been in 1937?

    Bob,

had to go look, i was just reading roaddevil's post.

it seems to be your reprint of the Str-8 buildup magazine story:
    http://www.buicks.net/racing/l8_performance.html
"The largest and the smallest first saw life in 1937"

    it's also on teambuick here:
    http://www.teambuick.com/reference/i...erformance.php

seems kind of strange that a magazine being published only ~30 years after the engines came out would get that kind of a fact that much wrong. course, it's a lot easier to do a lot of research nowadays.

I believe there was a major change in 1936

there may have been a 'major change' in the 320 architecture when in it was introduced but i get the idea that it's like the changeover from Str8 to Nail, that there was a year or two where the old and new designs co-existed.

would be interesting to know what the "change" was.

okay, i'm going to presume that most of the Carnut data is correct ( even though i've already found a bore error ) so this is what i've got for 1931-36:
    Eng......Actual........Bore.......Stroke......Serv ice
    221......220.72.....2.8750.....4.2500.....1931
    273......272.55.....3.0625.....4.6250.....1931-33
    345......344.72.....3.3125.....5.0000.....1931-35
    230......230.42.....2.9375.....4.2500.....1932-33 <<<< incorrectly given a 2-5/16" bore by Carnut, actually 2-15/16"
    233......233.04.....3.0938.....3.8750.....1934-36
    235......235.35.....2.9688.....4.2500.....1934-35
    278......278.14.....3.0938.....4.6250.....1934-35

duesy, if you would like Duesenberg data included pm me or something.

anybody that has more specific data or corrections, please let me know.

No 320 ci engine available 1931-36?

No 320 ci engine available 1931-36?

i didn't bother including that because it was in my previous data post with the 248 and 263. the 320 was introduced in 1936.
