    T5 Swap. Need Info.

Folks, I'd like to fit a T5 to my 1950 I8. I mentioned this in a couple other threads but thought I shouldn't hijack someonelse's thread.

My brother and I are just guys building a rod. We don't have the facilities to make our own bellhousing. I have read of the T5 being adapted to the original Buick bellhousing and would like to explore this idea.

We started out with a Aisin-Warner AX15 that Jeep used (I had one siting around). Its considered a medium duty transmission and should hold up fine behind the Buick. It has a favorable shifter location, as opposed to most T5s I've seem where the shifter is way back on the tailshaft. The AX15 seems it would work quite well but the design of the front of the tranny makes for a lot of cutting on the back to the bellhousing (at least at our present level of investigation). It uses a hydrualic throw-out bearing and that simplifies things a bit. But the rather extensive cutting of the raer face of the bellhousing has led me to consider an alternative.

So, can anyone here help out with info about fitting a T5 to the original Buick bellhousing? I don't presently have a T5 to use for checking things out. Before I spend $$$ for a T5, I thought I should ask here for some insight on his swap.

I know there is a company here in Minnesota that makes some adapters but they are expensive and we would like to try this ourselves.

Sounds like a cool idea. You may want to search around for a 4 speed truck bellhousing from a late 40's early 50's F2-f4 Ford truck. Its actually a 3-speed trans with a granny gear. We use this bellhousing to mate a t5 to a ford flathead motor. Offenhauser sells a bellhousing to mate a ford tranny to a 53-56 Nailhead. You should be able to modify this bellhousing to fit a straight 8 and then mate the t-5 with the Ford truck front shroud and mate it to the Offenhauser housing. Be careful of which T5 you get, the early to mid 80's had a different bolt pattern than the late 80's and early 90's. Plus, I think after 89-90 the T-5 had a electronic speedo hookup.

Here is the ebay auction for the Offenhauser adapter.

    adapting T-5 transmission

----------------------------------- http://www.inliners.org/Jack/T5tech.html ,, it shows how to adapt an S10 chevy Pickup T5 to a full size chevy bellhousing. also here on this site----- 'http://gamma.nic.fi/~marlin/august01.htm.'
It shows how to adapt a T10 muncie trans to a buick straight 8 bellhousing. Since the T5 is very close to the T10 mounting and bolt spacing it shows that a t5 can be adapted straight to a buick bellhousing.
